Hair Loss in Women

For many women that suffer from visible thinning hair or serious hair loss, the prospects for a cure or treatment are dim. Most approaches to hair loss are aimed at the much more common male hair loss, which is estimated to affect 1 in 3 adult men. While far less prevalent in women, hair loss is no less stressful to them. Instead, women who suffer from alopecia are faced with a social stigma because it is much rarer to see a balding woman than a balding man.

Unlike male hair loss, which is predominantly caused by a byproduct of the male hormone testosterone called DHT, female hair loss can have many different causes. Hair loss in women may be genetically inherited, caused from disease, triggered by stress or pregnancy, or brought on by a deficient thyroid. Studies have shown that the psychological effect of hair loss on women is more severe than with men too. Additionally, the prescription treatments used to treat male hair loss can actually be quite harmful to women.

In order to understand what causes female hair loss in women it is helpful to understand how the hair grows. Hair grows in two cycles, the anagen phase and the telogen phase. During the anagen phase of hair growth the hair strand grows half an inch a month for four to six years. This is the phase that the majority of all hair follicles are in at any given time. It is during the telogen phase that the hair stops growing for two to four months and then a new shaft of hair pushes out the old and the new strand of hair enters the anagen phase. Women who suffer from thinning hair typically have shorter anagen phases and longer telogen phases. This means there is less new hair growing in to replace hairs that are lost and the result is thinning hair all over the scalp.

When a sudden shock occurs to the body, either in the form of psychological or physical stress, the hair follicles can abruptly enter the telogen phase causing more than the usual amount of hair to fall out after two to three months. This is called stress alopecia. Stress alopecia is typically not a long-term cause of hair loss in females.
While genetics can play a role in women’s hair loss, it is not considered nearly as predominant a factor for women as it is for men.

Environmental factors, certain medications, stress and poor diet are all contributing factors, although many scientists believes that it is a combination of two or more of these factors that causes noticeable hair loss in women. To combat the effects of these factors, a variety of natural herbal ingredients, both topical and ingestible, have shown promise in limiting the effects of female hair loss and promoting healthy hair regrowth.
