Woman and Hair Loss, The Truth
A woman's hair loss is very different than a man's hair loss. Men who are balding are lucky; they can just shave their heads.
For us women experiencing hair loss, we have no such option. Bald women are unfashionable, uncommon, and receive lots of unwanted stares. And thinning hair on a lady simply never looks good.
Many people think hair loss is primarily an issue for men, but that's not true. Hair loss in women is a common problem. The American Academy of Dermatology says 30 million women in just the USA suffer from hair loss, and female hair loss is becoming more common!Hair loss can occur for many reason. One reason common reason is "Pattern Baldness." Most people have heard of male pattern baldness, but women commonly suffer from pattern baldness as well. Originally it was thought that both male and female pattern baldness were both extremely similar; that they were both caused by the same genetics.
However it's now been determined that male and female hair loss due to pattern baldness differs. In men, hormone imbalances cause a build up of DHT (dihydrotestosterone) which binds to receptors inside the hair follicle, eventually causing the hair follicle to shrink and slow hair loss. Preliminary research with female pattern baldness suggests that female enzymes are involved in the hair loss.
Pattern Baldness actually only accounts for 15% of women's hair loss. Women are more likely than men to develop autoimmune disorders, for example lupus, which can cause hair loss. If you start experiencing hair loss or thinning hair you'd better see your doctor right away in case it's a symptom of a serious medical condition! It's also possible that polycystic ovary syndrome can cause hair loss - again, see your doctor. We're not medical professionals and nothing on this Web site can be construed as medical advice!
Childbirth can also cause the hair to fall out as it is a stressful situation and stress can cause hair loss. Obviously this isn't something that effects men. We ladies are also more engage in "crazy diets" to drop a few quick pounds and they can cause hair loss.
Although you must see your doctor if you experience hair loss or hair thinning, don't let your doctor tell you that hair loss is the same in men and women. Insist on a complete workup to find the cause, which is hopefully nothing serious!
